The 17th regular and extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) began on Saturday morning in Tehran headed by Iran's Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh, one of the main objectives being the selection of a new secretary general or extension of the current Iranian Secretary General's activity.
Accordingly, in time with the re-nomination of the current Secretary General of GECF Mohammad Hossein Adeli, Libya has also announced readiness to take over the key position in the forum while the officials at Iran's Ministry of Oil are optimistic about Adeli to remain in the seat.
"So far, only Libya has expressed willingness to hold the position and there exists a high possibility for extending the period of Mohammad Hossein Adeli," Oil Minister Zanganeh told the reporters.
Mohammad Hossein Adeli had been appointed and introduced as the Secretary General of GECF during the 15th ministerial meeting of the forum.
GECF members account for 42 percent of global gas output, 67 percent of global gas reserves, 38 percent of pipe gas transmission, and 85 percent of global trade of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
The member countries of the Forum includes Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela, while Iraq, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman and Peru have the status of Observer Members.
